Crashed and Burnt
Sophiaâs storyâ¦
The next day, Ronnie was true to his word.
I made a slow start and heard him bustling around the flat while I kept the covers over me and tried to forget the mess I had gotten into the night before. A little before eleven, Ronnie tapped on the door to offer me coffee and he sat on the bed as I sipped it slowly and rejoined the world.
âI was thinking about all this and I reckon sheâs got a screw loose - split personality or something - but she reminds me of Christine Keeler. Do you remember her?â
âCanât say I do.â
âNo. You were probably too young. She nearly took down the government because she was a naughty girl. Got mixed up with a government minister named Profumo. He got found out having hanky-panky with the young Miss Keeler - very young in fact - and one thing led to another. It was an absolute bloody mess.â
âWhy does that remind you of Anita?â
âWell, do you really think sheâs from some fancy family and got all that stuff sheâs got from the goodness of their big, bloated plutocratic hearts?â
After seeing her steal the jewels so proficiently, I had to admit that I had begun to have grave doubts. Coupled with the discovery of her apparent home in some miserable London backstreet, my doubts were now compelling me to think that things were very far from what she would have us all believe.
âI donât know what to believe any more.â
âChristine Keeler mixed with all the big names in town, if you believed everything you read about the âProfumo affairâ as it was called. But the press soon found out that she lived in some miserable little glorified shack with a mother who could barely cope with her and a stepfather who liked her a bit too much, if you get my drift, or so the story goes. So she did what it took to push herself up and out of that and get somewhere in the world. Needless to say, a lot of it wasnât exactly legal or the kind of stuff that gets printed in Tatler.â He smiled and patted my hand. âSound like someone we might know? Oh, and Christine was very attractive too and thatâs what attractive women do - make the most of their assets. Youâre not the first one to think of marrying up.â He laughed and I grinned sheepishly. âTrouble with Miss Keeler though was that it wasnât so much marriage that she was after but cock. She liked that a lot. Especially a bit of black, apparently. Or more than a bit as the story goes. Couldnât get enough of it. And who can blame her? Who wouldnât?â he said with a smirk. âIâd probably be lined up right behind her for some of that.â
âRonnie! Donât be so dirty. Youâre making me blush.â
âOh, please! Miss butter-wouldnât-melt-in-her-mouth!â He rolled his eyes. âYou know what they say about black dick?
âNo, what?â
âBiggest and best in the world apparently.
